AURORA | Three city volleyball teams will try to qualify for the Class 5A state volleyball tournament from the comfort of their own gyms.
A total of five Aurora teams were among the 36 dispersed to 12 three-team regionals Monday by the Colorado High School Activities Association, with Eaglecrest, Cherokee Trail and Grandview all getting placed among the top 12, which gives them hosting duties for Saturday’s regionals.
Regis Jesuit and East Metro Athletic Conference champion Rangeview will play on the road.
All regional tournaments are schedule to start at 9 a.m. with the lowest seed playing the host team and the other two round robin matches
The winner of all 12 regionals advance to the 5A state volleyball tournament Nov. 9-10 at the Denver Coliseum.
Coach Tanya Bond’s Eaglecrest team has plenty of tradition at the state tournament and the Raptors have the inside track to making another appearance, as they received the No. 2 overall seed behind unbeaten Doherty.
Eaglecrest won the season-ending Ponderosa Mustang Classic and come into regionals with a 19-3 mark. The Raptors will battle with No. 23 Bear Creek (18-5) and No. 30 Fairview (9-13) to go to state.
Cherokee Trail finished up its regular season earlier than most teams and turned in a sparkling 17-6 record — which included a sweep of Cherry Creek in Centennial League play — which earned coach Terry Miller’s squad the No. 6 overall seed. The Cougars will play postseason volleyball on their home floor for the first time since they hosted a district tournament in 2007, when they were still in 4A.
No. 19 Loveland and No. 31 ThunderRidge rounded out the field in Cherokee Trail’s regional.
Grandview has won its last five matches and claimed the championship of the Legend Invitational, which helped boost coach Patty Chidress’ to the No. 7 overall seed and a home regional.
The Wolves have another Aurora team in its field in No. 18 Regis Jesuit, along with No. 30 Prairie View.
Rangeview won the EMAC title for the second straight season, but coach Larry Deffenbaugh’s 16-3 team ended up No. 27 seed. The Raiders will play at No. 10 Legend along with No. 15 Rocky Mountain.
