YOURNEWS | Twelve college students are skipping the beach, paying most of their expenses, and heading 2,000 miles west to Colorado to spend their spring break with seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
The young men and women from the University of Miami will spend their alternative spring break befriending residents of Chelsea Place, an Anthem Memory Care community.
They will participate alongside them in music, art, and other activities including an intergenerational African drumming circle at a local elementary school.
They will also participate in a virtual dementia tour, learning firsthand what it’s like to live with dementia.
The students will be at Chelsea Place, 14055 E. Quincy Ave., Aurora, Colorado from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 12-16.
“The experience will be powerful for the students as they build connections with our seniors,” said Jenni Dill, Chelsea Place life engagement director. “It’s remarkable that the students have chosen to engage here, and we are certain the young people and our residents will learn a lot from each other.”
