Editor: People of color continue to face persistent discrimination on a daily basis in stores, salons, and in accessing transportation including car services and taxis. The Equality Act would make this discrimination illegal. It would provide protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Colorado has made strides to close gaps in non-discrimination protections and we have federal civil rights laws in place that provide protections on the basis of race, color, national origin and in many cases also sex, disability and religion. Unfortunately, there are still big gaps in protections for LGBTQ people.
This is not about policy. It is about the nearly 2/3 of LGBTQ people who report experiencing discrimination. It is about the people feeling like they can’t be who they are or love who they love, they can’t build their families or seek healthcare without fear of hate, harm or discrimination. We simply MUST do better.
The House passed this important legislation, but it is languishing in the US Senate. Join me in calling on our senators to not only vote yes when the Equality Act comes before them, but to sign on as co-sponsors and push leadership to get this done right away!
