EDITOR: How about a new kind of government-reduction idea. Let each state set up its own federal offices, starting with the IRS.

The new system will collect the federal income taxes paid by individuals and corporations in each state, and keep it there for distribution to where it would be going anyway.

It would give money directly to CDOT for US highways, directly to Colorado public schools for education, etc. Don’t send income taxes to Washington, just to have some money sent back. That’s too cumbersome.

Then, each state would get to keep their share of federal monies, and not have to give a portion to other states.

I’m not sure what to do about all those buildings in Washington; perhaps expand the Smithsonian museum system.

States would now have to fund their own programs, with their own money.  Some federal agencies might have to stay in business, but states would have to donate money to them for their fair share. States like Florida would have give more to FEMA than some other states, perhaps. And, each state IRS office could decide if they want to increase their compliance/enforcement for those who potentially are cheating on their taxes.

Lots of possibilities.

Hey, just a whimsical idea.  Run with it.

One reply on “LETTERS: Cut federal government? Just bypass it altogether with a state system.”

  1. Of course, that would mean no navy, no army, no air force…

I don’t think you’ve really thought this through.
