AURORA | A 16-year-old person died Wednesday night in Aurora after being shot while in the parking lot of the Town Center at Aurora Mall, according to Aurora police.

Police responded to the mall on East Alameda Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. March 6 on “a report of a person stumbling around in the parking lot,” according to police.

Officers contacted the individual, a juvenile, determined he or she had been shot, and transported the person to a nearby hospital. 

The person died following surgery, police said.

Police officials declined to specify the gender of the slain child.

“We are not releasing any further information on the juvenile and have no further information to release about the case at this time,” Officer Anthony Camacho, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department, said in an email sent Thursday morning.

Police did not specify how many times the victim was shot.

Detectives are investigating the death as a homicide.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim in the coming days following the notification of family members.

No suspects had been arrested as of Thursday morning, according to police.
