THE WEEK PAST IN AURORA PREP SPORTS, 4.16-4.22.24

MONDAY, APRIL 22: The Cherokee Trail baseball team earned a nine-inning Centennial League win at Arapahoe, as it scored twice in the top of the ninth and held on for a 4-3 victory. Logan Reid allowed five hits and two runs over eight innings with eight strikeouts and Connor Carlson earned the save. Landon Olds homered and drove in two runs for Cherokee Trail. …Luke Reasbeck pitched six solid innings and Christian Lopez tossed a clean final inning as the Regis Jesuit baseball team topped Castle View 4-3. Lopez drove in a run as did Trevor Nordstrom via home run. …The Gateway baseball team earned a 3-2 walk-off win over Adams City. Angel Ferrusquia and Christopher Delatorre had RBI and Mervin Loya scored twice for the Olys. …The visiting Grandview girls soccer team got second-half goals from Gaby Hansen and Isis Prestwood to help keep Smoky Hill at bay for a 5-1 Centennial League victory. Elyse Bailey scored for the Buffaloes in the second half. …The Overland boys volleyball team downed visiting Kennedy 25-15, 25-13, 25-22. …The Grandview girls tennis team got a win at No. 2 singles from Channing Worthington to go with doubles victories from Lauren Stec and Romie Pachorek (No. 1), Linhvy Nguyen and Emma Cary (No. 2) and Maddie Mayer and Quincy Muntean (No. 3) in a 4-3 Centennial League home dual win over Smoky Hill. The Buffaloes won three three-set matches (Maryjane Ranum and Katerina Karpouzos at No. 1 and No. 3 singles and the No. 4 doubles team of Jocelyn Delgado and Ella Hanley). …The Regis Jesuit girls tennis team earned a 6-1 Continental League dual win at Chaparral that saw the Raiders win all matches save No. 1 singles. …The Cherokee Trail girls golf team finished third and Grandview placed fourth at the Centennial League tournament played at Murphy Creek G.C. The Wolves’ Caroline Ryan shot a plus-6 78 to finish second individually, while the Cougars were paced by the 86 by Haylee Clark that put her in eighth place.

SATURDAY, APRIL 20: The Grandview girls soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to Rock Canyon at Halftime Help Stadium. …The Regis Jesuit boys swim team finished as the runner-up of the John Strain Memorial Invitational meet hosted by Cherry Creek. Grandview came in fourth, Cherokee Trail eighth and Overland 10th in the 12-team field. Regis Jesuit and Grandview had event champions each in Chief Greene-Cockriel (200 yard freestyle) for the Raiders and Oliver Schimberg (100 yard backstroke) for the Wolves. (full team scores and meet results, here). …The Vista PEAK Prep boys volleyball team finished 3-1 at the Rangeview Tournament, with its only loss coming in three sets to Niwot, which held on for a 25-22, 18-25, 15-13 win over the Bison, who were paced by Tristan Rowley and Liam Jungheim with eight kills apiece. Host Rangeview split four matches. …In the Douglas County Tournament, the Hinkley boys volleyball team went 2-2 and Gateway finished 1-3. The Thunder defeated the Olys 25-14, 23-25, 15-12 as the two went head-to-head. …Despite 15 kills from Callen Wolf and 14 from Sef Musani, the Regis Jesuit boys volleyball team saw Valor Christian prevail 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25 on the Raiders’ home floor. Gabe Sullivan added five aces, five blocks and 35 assists for Regis Jesuit.

FRIDAY, APRIL 19: Cherokee Trail finished third in the boys standings at the Centaurus Twilight track & field meet on the strength of a pair of victories in relay events (the 4×200 and 4×800), a 400 meter victory from McKay Larsen on the track and field wins from Marcus Adams (shot put), Ayden Mills (discus) and Sawyer Carr (pole vault). Sanaai Hancock swept the 100 and 300 meter hurdles for the Cherokee Trail girls, who finished in seventh place. …The Regis Jesuit boys track team finished sixth among 20 scoring teams at the Huskie Twilight meet at EchoPark Stadium with event titles coming from David Flaig (1,600 meters) and Charlie Dutmer (110 meter hurdles). The Regis Jesuit girls finished in 14th place. …The Grandview boys lacrosse team earned its third straight win with a snowy 15-10 road victory at Denver South. …The Cherokee Trail boys lacrosse team edged Denver East 10-9. …The Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team fell to Colorado Academy 10-8. …The Cherokee Trail boys volleyball team paid a visit to two-time defending state champion Discovery Canyon and lost to the Thunder 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11.

THURSDAY, APRIL 18: The Vista PEAK Prep baseball team continued its recent offensive explosion with a 22-1 victory over Lincoln that saw Steven Reaux pace the Bison with four RBI and Domenic Montoya (who went 4-for-5) and Abel Salinas (3-for-3) had three RBI apiece. …The Gateway girls soccer team got back in the win column with a 3-0 win against Alameda Invitational at the Aurora Sports Park that included two goals from Maria Herrera and another from Kee Awi. …The Grandview girls soccer team got a goal from Sam Nunez in the opening half and held on for a 1-0 victory over Eaglecrest. …Samantha Garofalo and Ayanna Mackey had two goals apiece and eight players scored as the Cherokee Trail girls soccer team earned a chilly 10-0 road win at Overland. …The Regis Jesuit girls soccer team scored in the second half and finished in a 1-1 Continental League deadlock with Castle View. …The Rangeview boys lacrosse team doubled up Palmer 10-5. …A seven-goal performance from Shylin Collins wasn’t enough for the Rangeview girls lacrosse team in a 23-8 loss to Northfield. …Chase Jensen racked up 17 kills and John Clinton contributed 15 kills and 13 digs as the Cherokee Trail boys volleyball team downed Cherry Creek 25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 25-22. …The Eaglecrest boys volleyball team topped a rolling Grandview team 25-19, 25-18, 25-22. …The Vista PEAK Prep boys volleyball team had nine kills from Tristan Rowley and 23 assists and four aces from Kaiyan Ivey in a 25-9, 25-7, 25-16 sweep of Westminster. …Samuel Addai-Opoku piled up 15 kills, while Ryan Bieber added 10 and Pragyan Gurung dished our 23 assists as the Hinkley boys volleyball team swept visiting rival Gateway 25-23, 25-18, 25-16. …Ayon Hammond had 11 kills and four blocks to fuel a 25-9, 25-16, 25-14 victory for the Rangeview boys volleyball team at Denver South. …The Regis Jesuit boys volleyball team defeated ThunderRidge 25-15, 25-17, 25-16.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17: A number of local schools celebrated the late National Letter of Intent Signing Day period with ceremonies of various sizes at city schools. An updated list of signees by school, here. …Liam Mosley pitched five shutout innings and scattered three hits with nine strikeouts, while Andrew Bell and Gavin Cronin had two RBI apiece as the Regis Jesuit baseball team downed ThunderRidge 6-3 on the road. Christian Lopez and Chase Massey had two hits apiece for the Raiders. …Alexsandria Ortiz had two goals, while Rut Salinas also scored as the Hinkley girls soccer team topped Jefferson 3-1 at the Aurora Sports Park. Keeper Tania Ramirez Cardenas had four saves for the Thunder. …The Smoky Hill girls soccer team fell to Heritage 6-1 despite a goal from Lauren Nesbitt and 22 saves from Emeline Kennedy. …Liam Szarka piled up six goals, while Owen Kulczewski added three for the Grandview boys lacrosse team, which downed rival Cherokee Trail 14-10 to win the Predators Cup. Nate Gilmore had four goals and Ethan Conover two for the Cougars. …Aubrey Benton scored a handful of goals, while Kyla Bieker and Lorelei Gearity had four apiece for the Cherokee Trail girls lacrosse team retained the Predators Cup with a 16-7 win over Grandview. Laurel Johnson had five goals for the Wolves. …Phoebe Rogala tallied six goals and had three assists, while Madisyn Jokerst contributed five goals for the Regis Jesuit girls lacrosse team in an 18-5 road win over Arapahoe.

TUESDAY, APRIL 16: Justin Dean tossed six innings and recorded seven strikeouts to lead the Grandview baseball team to a 6-4 win at Mullen. Jax Pfister had three hits, while AJ Maroni drove in a pair for the Wolves. …The Cherokee Trail baseball team earned a second win over Eaglecrest in a five-day span with a 13-3 victory that saw Landon Olds, Luca Slavato and Jack Boyko pick up two RBI apiece and Jake Hernandez score three times for the Cougars. Noah Brown knocked in two of the three runs for the Raptors. …Sebastian Heredia-Ruiz allowed two runs in five innings and drove in two runs himself as the Rangeview baseball team topped Kennedy 14-2. Micah McPhail drove in two runs and scored three times, while Ryan Luevanos had four RBI and Max McGinnis added three. …Isaac Bond doubled twice among three hits and drove in six runs, while Adam Rocha, Domenic Montoya, Connor Angelini and Evan Kelly had four RBI apiece as the Vista PEAK Prep baseball team rolled to a 33-2 victory over Denver West in three innings. …Hazel Bonansinga notched both goals for the Rangeview girls soccer team in a 2-0 defeat of Hinkley at the Aurora Sports Park. …Elyse Bailey and Brooke Roth had two goals and two assists apiece and Alicia Lopez also tallied twice as the Smoky Hill girls soccer team downed Overland 11-1 at Stutler Bowl in Centennial League play. …The Grandview girls soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Cherry Creek in a matchup of Centennial League leaders at Legacy Stadium. …The Gateway girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 3-0 Colorado League road loss at Adams City. …The Cherokee Trail boys swim team celebrated its seniors, then went on to a 99-87 Centennial League home dual victory over Grandview. Bronson Smothers won twice, Tyson Walker and diver Sawyer Carr also had victories and the Cougars swept the freestyle relay events, while the Wolves countered with two event wins apiece for Oliver Schimberg and Evan Higgins, one from Ethan Finlay in addition to the 200 medley relay. …Rocco Biviano scored four goals, Jamie Rosenzweig dished out four assists to go with his two goals and the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team rode a nine-goal second period to a 15-4 home win over Rock Canyon. …Alejandro Garcia had 10 kills and four aces and Devan Hall dished out 22 assists as the Grandview boys volleyball team defeated rival Cherokee Trail 25-18, 26-24, 25-19. John Clinton had five kills and 10 digs for the Cougars. …Musa Akbar and Jackson Shaw had 10 kills apiece as the Eaglecrest boys volleyball team swept past Valor Christian 25-20, 25-22, 25-17. …The Hinkley boys volleyball team earned a 25-11, 25-13, 18-25, 25-22 win at Thomas Jefferson behind double-digit kill efforts from Samuel Addai-Opoku (13) and Ammon Fifita (12). …Callen Wolf notched 11 kills and Tyler Ryan added 10 for the Regis Jesuit boys volleyball team in a 25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Highlands Ranch in a match that saw Gabe Sullivan register 35 assists. …The Overland boys volleyball team swept past visiting Mullen 25-20, 25-15, 25-19. …Despite nine kills apiece from Pethuel Ofori and Nicholas Tapparo, the host Rangeview boys volleyball team saw Regis Groff earn a 25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 25-20 victory. …Natali Marshall prevailed in a tight No. 1 singles match for Eaglecrest, but Grandview won the remainder of the matches — including three-setters at No. 2 singles from Channing Worthington and from Hailey Ocansey and Ashlyn Thompson at No. 4 doubles — in a 6-1 Centennial League girls tennis victory. …
Kaylee Hays and Anhelyca Garibay rallied from a set down to win the No. 2 doubles match that gave the Vista PEAK Prep girls tennis team a 7-0 home sweep of rival Rangeview. …Two Aurora girls tennis teams — from Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit — earned 7-0 sweeps of Overland and Douglas County, respectively. …Four local Aurora girls golf teams competed in the City League Invitational at City Park G.C. in Denver and there were a pair of top-10 individual finishers among them as Vista PEAK Prep’s Sophia Capua shot plus-8 79 to tie for fourth, while Grandview’s Caroline Ryan tied for seventh with an 80. Cherokee Trail had top team honors for locals as it finish in fourth, a stroke ahead of Grandview with Vista PEAK Prep in 10th and Rangeview in 16th.
