The Athena Project‘s “Plays in Progress” series, a collection of workshop level stage pieces by female playwrights, is set to kick off tonight at the Aurora Fox theater, 9900 E. Colfax Ave. The six  new titles – Death By Hairbrush by Tami Canaday, Marla and Her Prayers by Kim Merrill, The Living by Nina Miller, Race Relations by Carrie Printz, The Record Breakers by Kendall Sherwood and Tell Martha Not to Moan by Clinnesha Sibley – represent a wide range of genres, themes and plot structures. The playwrights come from across the country, and topics range from the moral implications of forgiving murder to the lasting scars of 1940s riots in Detroit.
The shows will run on a revolving schedule at the Fox until July 22 before moving on to the Edge Theatre in Lakewood. Sibley’s Tell Martha Not to Moan will kick off the series tonight. Audience members will have the chance to vote for their preferred production, and that feedback will figure into choosing a show that will move on to a full production at the Athena Project Festival in March of next year.
Tickets start at $10 for a single show, or $35 for a pass to all six titles. Information, schedules and ticket purchases: athenaprojectfestival.org, aurorafoxartscenter.org or 303-739-1970.
