DENVER | In the now five-year history of girls wrestling as a Colorado High School Activities Association sanctioned sport, this season marked the most wrestlers from Aurora area programs to make the state tournament medal podium.

The previous high was six in 2024 and that number grew to eight in 2025, as a split into Class 5A and 4A spread out the talent that had been in one division since the sport held its first official state tournament in 2021.

For the first time, Aurora had two girls state champions, as Regis Jesuit sophomore Remington Zimmerer won at 120 pounds and Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon took the 125-pound title, while the city also had four fourth-place finishers, plus one in fifth place and one in sixth place when the tournament concluded Feb. 15 at Ball Arena.

Coach Ashley Jaramillo’s Vista PEAK Prep team finished an all-time high seventh in the final standings (up 24 spots from last season) and the Bison had three placers among the program’s all-time high of seven state qualifiers.

Besides Bacon, junior Parice Jones (190 pounds) and sophomore Khloe Yizar (235) both earned fourth-place results in their first trip to the state tournament. Yizar avenged a loss to Overland senior Ruth Worknhe earlier in the tournament with a victory in an all-Aurora consolation semifinal to move into the third-place match, where she lost a 1-0 decision, while Jones had three wins by pins in five state matches and also placed fourth.

Eaglecrest had the largest contingent of qualifiers among Aurora area teams with nine and three made the podium, the same number coach Horacio Vialpando’s program had in 2024.

Senior Bailee Mestas (130 pounds) and freshman Maxime Lantz (140) both won their first matches and lost in the quarterfinals and they each went on to place fourth. Mestas finished 4-2 for the tournament and went 42-15 for the season, while Lantz had the state record and state and went 34-16 in her debut campaign.

Senior Natalie Replogle lost her opener at 145 pounds and had to go the long way through the back side of the bracket. She won the third round of consolations to assure herself a podium place and she finished 3-3 (35-16 for the season) and in sixth place.

Worknhe had a big breakthrough, as she hadn’t come away with a single victory in two previous trips to state (going a combined 0-4), but won twice on the opening night to make it all the way to the semifinals, where she lost to Standley Lake’s Soledad Luchman. She lost to Yizar in a rematch, then pinned Arapahoe’s Abby Lapp to finish fifth as the Trailblazers’ first placer since Vianca Mendoza took fifth at 120 pounds in 2023.
