GOLDEN | On Monday night, the Grandview girls soccer team became the latest team that couldn’t keep Ralston Valley star Raleigh Greason off the scoreboard.
Greason — far and away the leading goal-scorer in Class 5A this season — put two shots into the back of the net in the last 10 minutes of the opening half of a Class 5A girls soccer state quarterfinal at the North Area Athletic Complex to give the Mustangs the lead at the break.
Third-seeded Ralston Valley added another in the second half from freshman Evilyn Moorwood in a 3-0 defeat of the 13th-seeded Wolves that earned it a spot in Wednesday’s semifinals at the University of Denver. The Mustangs will oppose top-seeded Mountain Vista, which advanced with a 1-0 overtime win over No. 8 Pine Creek.
Coach Brian Wood’s Grandview team finished the season 10-6-1.
The Wolves hadn’t ceded a single goal in their first two playoff contests — a 6-0 win over No. 20 Adams City and 2-0 victory over No. 29 Arvada West — and managed to hold Ralston Valley off the scoreboard for nearly 30 minutes of the quarterfinal.
Grandview had four corner kick chances in the early going, but couldn’t convert any.
The Wolves did a good job for the most part in the half against Greason, who scored three goals in a first-round victory over Cherokee Trail and added two against Highlands Ranch in the second round to give her 34 for the season.
Greason finally broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute and just seven minutes later had put another shot into the back of the net to give Ralston Valley the advantage.
Moorwood upped the lead with a goal in the 72nd minute.
