WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON | Half of the team that helped Regis Jesuit win the Class 5A girls state golf tournament in the spring makes up half of a team from Colorado with bigger goals.

Junior-to-be Mary Weinstein and sophomore-to-be Jaclyn Murray — part of the Raiders’ 5A title win in May at Raccoon Creek G.C. — seek success for the state, as they team with Jennifer Kupcho and Kylee Sullivan on Colorado’s team at the 2014 Girls’ Junior Americas Cup tournament Tuesday through Thursday at the Walla Walla Country Club.

The Colorado contingent takes on an elite field of other teams from a variety of states — several from California, plus Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming — along with international visitors from British Columbia and Mexico in the 37th annual tournament, which is back in the state where it began in 1978.

Each team is made up of four players who each play 54 holes, with three scores contributing to the team score. The highest score is thrown out.

All four Colorado team members are coming off successful high school seasons in the spring, as Weinstein and Murray were part of the 5A state champion — as well as the 2014 Aurora Sentinel All-City Girls Golf Team — Sullivan keyed Cheyenne Mountain to the 4A state title and Kupcho of Jefferson Academy won the 4A individual title by a whopping 14 strokes.

Kupcho — a Wake Forest recruit — is the only one of the foursome with Junior Americas Cup experience. She played in the tournament last year when Colorado finished third behind Mexico and Southern California and also in 2012.

Players from Aurora programs have history in the tournament recently. Regis Jesuit graduate Kathleen Kershisnik was selected to the Colorado team in both 2009 — when Overland grad Somin Lee was also on a team that finished 11th — and in 2010, when Colorado placed 10th.

The Girls’ Junior Americas Cup rotates states and is next scheduled to be played in Colorado in 2018.
