AURORA | The Regis Jesuit girls basketball team maintained its annual tradition of qualifying for the Sweet 16, as it earned a 10th straight trip Saturday afternoon.
The 11th-seeded Raiders entertained 22nd-seeded Overland — which conversely was in search of its first Sweet 16 berth since back in 2008 — and came through with the key plays when needed en route to a 68-48 victory.
Sophomore Tiana Rogers scored 18 points, sophomore Khloe Miller added 15 and senior Izzy Davies had 12 for coach Jordan Kasemodel’s Regis Jesuit team, which earned the spot opposite sixth-seeded Denver East (led by former Regis Jesuit coach Carl Mattei) in the March 4 Sweet 16.
The Raiders will visit the Angels — a 53-17 winner over No. 27 Monarch in the second round — at 6 p.m. with a chance to advance to the Denver Coliseum and the Great 8. It will be the second postseason meeting of the programs in the past three seasons, as Regis Jesuit won the last matchup in the second round of the 2024 postseason.
Overland, which last made the Sweet 16 on its way to the Great in 2008, got a game-high 23 points from Michaela Halton, while fellow junior Sasha Davis added 18. The Trailblazers posted 14 wins for a second straight season and finished 14-10.
Regis Jesuit took advantage of an injury that depleted Overland’s post presence early as the 6-foot-3 Miller had three baskets in the opening frame. Davies scored seven of her points in the second quarter to help push the Raiders’ advantage into double figures by the break.
Both teams were prolific offensively in the third quarter with a combined 41 points that included 11 from Halton for Overland and 11 from Rogers for Regis Jesuit, which managed to add five more points to its lead going into the final frame.
Sasha Davis had six points and Halton seven in the final period as the Trailblazers caused some difficulty with pressure, but the Raiders broke the press on several occasions for layups and never let the lead dip below 16 points.
With a win over Denver East, Regis Jesuit can surpass the Sweet 16 round that stopped in last season and send it to the Denver Coliseum for the first time since the 2023-24 season, which ended with a loss to Valor Christian in the 6A state championship game.
Both of Overland’s senior regulars — guard Malia Relford and post Aubrey Butler — missed the game due to injury and the Trailblazers expect to return a group that was heavy on juniors this season.
