AURORA | Sienna Betts garnered significant defensive attention from Regis Jesuit Tuesday night, but the Grandview girls basketball star could not be slowed.
The 6-foot-4 senior standout poured in 20 points despite numerous double and triple teams, while senior Maya Smith and sophomore Ava Chang were key in the finish as the host Wolves defeated the rival Raiders 44-33.
Smith scored all eight of her points in the pivotal third period and Chang connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Josh Ulitzky’s team earned its third straight win and improve to 9-3 on the season. Grandview sits No. 2 in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s most recent Class 6A seeding index.
Regis Jesuit (No. 11 in 6A) managed to erase a double-digit deficit on multiple occasions in the first half and get back to a tie on back-to-back 3-pointers from seniors Iliana Greene and Mallory Neff early in the third quarter, but got outscored 22-11 the rest of the way.
Coach Jordan Kasemodel’s Raiders — who got six points apiece from Neff and fellow seniors Alice Lynett and Jane Rumpf and freshman Tiana Rogers — is now 8-5.
Nearing the end of a very difficult non-league portion of the schedule, Grandview (which played without junior regular Lexi Yi for the second straight game) is set to play host to Legend (8-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday, while Regis Jesuit dives into Continental League play with a Friday home contest against Douglas County (2-8).
