AURORA | The Rangeview boys basketball team lost nothing in the week since the end of the regular season, as it overwhelmed Erie in a Class 6A second round state playoff contest Friday night.
The third-seeded Raiders sat out the opening round — in which the 35th-seeded Tigers played and won over No. 30 Rocky Mountain — but came out ready to go from the opening tip off and rolled to a 73-37 victory.
Coach Shawn Palmer’s Rangeview team put up eight points in the opening minute-plus, built an 18-point lead after one quarter and went on to a big win that landed a second straight trip to the Sweet 16. The Raiders got 17 points from junior Archie Weatherspoon V, plus 16 apiece from senior Aidan Perez and sophomore Marceles Duncan to improve to 21-3 on the season.
Rangeview will play host to No. 14 ThunderRidge (16-8) — an 81-71 winner over No. 19 Overland in the second round — at 6 p.m. Tuesday with a trip to the Denver Coliseum to play in the Great 8 at stake.
The Raiders capped the regular season with an 83-51 win over George Washington in the City League Gold Division championship game on Feb. 21 and brought the energy from the get-go against the Tigers.
Anthony drained a 3-point on the opening possession of the game, which was followed by a Perez layup and 3-pointer by Duncan for an 8-0 advantage with just 60 seconds gone by. Duncan added two dunks a short time later and Perez threw one down as well as the lead grew quickly into double digits.
A steal by senior Tyson Tuck and feed to Duncan for a layup beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter with Rangeview ahead 26-8. The advantage grew by a point going into halftime at 36-17 and expanded to 28 points by the end of the third.
