AURORA | The Centennial League boys basketball standings tightened Wednesday night when Overland knocked Grandview out of the sole possession of the top spot.
The Wolves — who sit No. 10 in Class 6A in the Colorado High School Activities Association rankings — paid a visit to the Trailblazers with a 4-0 mark in league play as they sought to strengthen their position to game the top seed for the upcoming Centennial League tournament, but could not overcome the hosts in crunch time of a 73-66 loss.
Overland expanded a four-point lead to nine in the last two minutes of the third quarter on a burst that included two baskets from senior Kymani Eason and a corner 3-pointer from junior Palmer Bass and kept Grandview at bay in the closing minutes.
Another Bass 3-pointer gave Overland a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and senior Mekhi McNeal scored some tough baskets to preserve the lead.
Coach Danny Fisher’s Trailblazers improved to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in league play, while coach Ryan Turk’s Wolves had a six-game winning streak — which stretched back to a Jan. 9 loss to Rangeview — come to an end and now sit 13-5 overall and 4-1 in league.
Senior Jiovanni White led Grandview with 19 points, while fellow seniors Noah Sevy and Charlie Atkinson added 14 and 10, respectively.
Centennial League play continues for both teams at 7 p.m. Friday, as Grandview plays host to Smoky Hill (2-15, 0-5), while Overland goes to Cherokee Trail (13-5, 3-2).
