DENVER | Night in and night out over the past three weeks, the Grandview boys and girls basketball teams have taken turns supporting each other’s quests in their respective Class 5A state tournaments.
On the last night of the 2017-18 basketball season, the two teams will play on the same floor at the Denver Coliseum seeking to celebrate state championships together.
The Grandview girls won their first state championship last season and earned a chance to go back-to-back with a victory over Fossil Ridge in Thursday night’s semifinals. On Friday night, they showed up in the back hallway of the Denver Coliseum to celebrate with the boys team after its 42-39 upset semifinal victory over No. 2 ThunderRidge, which put them in the state final for the first time.
Regis Jesuit won 5A boys and girls state basketball championship in 2009 and Grandview has a chance to match that feat‚ which hasn’t been accomplished by any other school since.
The fourth-seeded Grandview girls (24-3) face off with No. 6 Regis Jesuit (24-3) at 6:30 p.m., while will be followed by the sixth-seeded Grandview boys (23-4) against No. 5 George Washington (22-5).
