LAKEWOOD | Down two runs after just two batters in the opener of the Class 5A Championship Series, the Grandview baseball team didn’t panic Friday morning.
A three-base error put the top-seeded Wolves in a hole at All-Star Park, but they kept composed, chipped away and went ahead with a four-run rally in the sixth inning that held up in a 5-2 victory over No. 8 Castle View.
Junior Ethan Wachsmann overcame the early trouble and allowed no runs and just two hits the rest of the way in a complete game effort that set up Grandview’s pitching for the rest of the opening weekend. Wachsmann struck out six as he improved to 7-1 on the season.
Coach Scott Henry’s Wolves (22-4) moved into a 2:30 p.m. contest against the winner of the subsequent first round contest between No. 5 Broomfield and No. 4 Fossil Ridge. A win in that contest guarantees the winner a spot among the four teams to advance to the final weekend.
In the opening round, the Wolves broke the game open with a rally in the sixth inning that included two-run base hits from senior Justin Dean as well as junior AJ Maroni.
