AURORA |  An Aurora man faces charges of sexual assault on a child and sexual exploitation of a child after a months-long investigation stemming from “cyber tips” led investigators to a profusion of child sexual abuse material kept by the man, police said in a statement.

Vincente Ashly Olvera, 41, turned himself in to law enforcement Feb. 22 on a warrant issued by the Aurora Police Department, authorities said in a news release Thursday.

He is charged in Arapahoe District Court with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and sexual exploitation of a child.

Olvera told police that the period of time when he was accused of assaulting a child at his home, he may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, investigators said in the arrest affidavit.

The assault charges were linked to allegations from last year.

“He responded that it did not make sense to him, and admitted there was a period when he was not sober and was under the influence of substances, including methamphetamine,” investigators said in an arrest affidavit. “Olvera explained that during his drug use, he would experience memory lapses and lose track of time in moments and pockets.”

He said, however, he did not think he assaulted a child who was spending the night at his home with other children.

That allegation was referred to police from another nearby jurisdiction, where it was reported.

The Aurora investigation included a time period between December 2023 and January 2024, when the Aurora Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit received multiple “cyber tips” from an cell phone provider indicating that Olvera’s cellphone account was downloading child sexual abuse material, police said.

Last August, detectives executed a search warrant at Olvera’s Aurora residence and seized several electronic devices. Investigators later found more than 1,400 files of child sexual abuse material on those devices, according the arrest affidavit.

Many of the images depicted sexual abuse of infants and very young children, according to investigators.

Olvera has been released from the Arapahoe County jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond.

Investigators did not detail in the affidavit why Olvera faces the sex-assault charges linked to being in a position of trust.

The Aurora Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit worked with Homeland Security Investigations, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation as part of the Colorado Cyber Guardian Task Force toward the arrest, according to a statement by police spokesperson Joe Moylan. The task force includes local, state and federal agencies in the Denver metro area that focus on investigations involving child exploitation and child sex trafficking.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
