AURORA | A 2-year-old boy has died after falling out of his father’s arms at the top of an escalator at the Town Center at Aurora mall.
Aurora police said the toddler leapt out of the man’s arms at about 4 p.m. July 25, falling from the mall’s second floor to the first floor. Agent Matt Longshore, spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department, said the father was holding his child at the top of an escalator.
“The child lunged forward and the father lost his grip and the child fell to the first floor,” Longshore wrote in an email.
The boy was declared dead at a local hospital the morning of July 26.
Investigators do not suspect any foul play was involved in the fatal fall.
“The investigation is still in the early stages at this time however the incident appears to be an accident,” Longshore wrote.
The department’s unit that investigates all incidents in which a young child is killed or seriously injured is currently looking into the fall, Longshore said.
A representative for the Aurora shopping complex offered the following statement via email: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy’s family. We continue to work closely with the Aurora Fire and Police Departments as they investigate the accident.”
