AURORA | Former Broncos linebacker Andra Davis pleaded not guilty to assault and battery charges in Aurora Municipal Court Wednesday morning, nearly two months after he became embroiled in a violent incident at a recent high school girls basketball game.
Davis, 40, is accused of strangling and pushing an athletic director from Regis Jesuit High School into a wall following a contentious girls basketball game between Regis Jesuit and Grandview High School on Dec. 12, according to police reports detailing the incident. He played for the Denver Broncos and two other NFL teams, according to NFL records.
Aurora police served Davis a court summons related to the charges last month.
Davis reportedly became incensed after Regis Jesuit Girls Division Athletic Director John Koslosky, 54, guided Davis’ daughter, Alisha Davis, off the basketball court after she punched a Regis player during the recent game.
In video footage of the game, Alisha can be seen punching a Regis player in the throat in the waning moments of the contest. She received two technical fouls and was later ejected.
Following the ejection, “(Andra) Davis jumped over several people on the stands to get to the court … and he stood by the wall,“ according to the police reports. Police then told Davis and his wife they could not cross to the other side of the gym.
After the game, Davis followed Koslosky into a hallway beside the gym and began choking him, according to the police reports.
Koslosky suffered a neck injury and a strained pectoral muscle as a result of the scuffle, according to police.
Regis administrators decided to pursue charges against Andra Davis around Dec. 20, according to the reports.
Accompanied by several family members, Davis appeared in court Wednesday morning wearing boots, jeans and a teal bomber jacket.
Davis, now retired, played 10 seasons in the National Football League, including one with the Broncos from 2009 to 2010.
Davis’ attorney, Mark Bryant, formally entered the not guilty plea and requested a pre-trial conference.
Associate Municipal Judge Dana Spade did not set a date for the pre-trial proceeding.
Davis and his attorney will have to submit their request for a jury trial by Feb. 27.
