AURORA | Aurora police are recommending vehicular homicide charges be filed against a Florida man accused of causing a fatal crash while driving drunk in the city this weekend.
Officials said the 24-year-old man from Florida was driving a Burgundy GMC Yukon over the speed limit on East Alameda Parkway shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 21 when he collided with a white Toyota Prius attempting to turn left from Alameda onto South Airport Boulevard.
The driver of the Prius, a 25-year-old man from Aurora, was declared dead at the scene.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office is expected to identify the man in the coming days.
The driver of the Yukon remained hospitalized as of Saturday evening, police said. Officials said he will be identified when he is released from medical care.
“Alcohol and speed, by the driver of the Yukon, are believed to be contributing factors leading to the fatal crash, Officer Crystal McCoy wrote in a news release. “The driver of the Yukon, who is still hospitalized, will be charged with vehicular homicide upon release from the hospital. Once he is charged his identity will be released.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision early Saturday or may have dashboard camera footage of the incident is encouraged to call the Denver Metro Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters who call the Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and be eligible for rewards up to $2,000.
