AURORA | Bitter cold will give way to mostly sunny skies with a melting high in the 40s today as the Aurora region thaws out from a cold spell, forecasters say.

Cherry Creek Schools is on-schedule today, school officials say. Regis Jesuit High School is operating on a one-hour delay, and Aurora Public Schools is operating on a two-hour delay.

“For those students who ride the bus, school buses will pick up students two hours later than usual at their regular bus stops to take them to school,” according to APS officials. “AM preschool will be cancelled. PM preschool start times will stay the same. Schools will still end at their regular times.”

Aurora said its new Navigation Campus homeless center was near capacity going into the cold wave with about 300 residents.

“That total eclipses our full capacity of 200 people at the Aurora Day Resource Center when it was our primary shelter last winter,” Aurora spokesperson Joe Rubino said in a statement.” We’re pleased we have expanded options to get people out of the cold.”

In addition, the Aurora Community Outreach Team was sent out into the Aurora community, seeking out homeless people and offering services, Rubino said.

Aurora police did not report any cold-related deaths over the weekend.

Aurora deployed about two-dozen snow plows to handle snowy and icy streets over the weekend, officials said.

Sheriff officials in Arapahoe County have placed their jurisdiction on accident alert Monday morning. That includes Centennial, Bennett, Deer Trail and Foxfield. Motorists there who are involved in crashes are asked not to call dispatchers unless it involves injuries or a disabled vehicle.

Aurora firefighters were called to a fire early Sunday at an apartment complex in the 14000 block of East Mississippi Avenue Place.

The fire was reported at about 6 a.m.

“The fire was contained to one unit, causing major damage,” Aurora fire officials said in a statement. “One resident has been displaced by the fire. The cause is under investigation.”
