AURORA | Community leaders, elected officials and advocates from across metro Denver will gather Saturday to celebrate Women’s History Month with a focus on the contributions and perspectives of Black women in Colorado.
The event is open to the public and held by the Colorado Black Round Table from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zion Senior and Community Resource Center in northeast Denver.
Organizers say Saturday’s program is designed to highlight leadership, equity and community-driven solutions while honoring women making an impact across sectors.
The celebration will include a “Black Women’s Wisdom Circle” panel featuring prominent figures such as former Denver City Council President Elbra Wedgeworth and former Aurora state Sen. Janet Buckner, among others, who will discuss what organizers describe as “a legacy of getting it done every day.”
A centerpiece of the event is the Women’s History Month Community Service Award recognition ceremony. Honorees include a wide range of civic and nonprofit leaders, business owners and educators. Among those being recognized is Brittany Winkfield, Aurora Sentinel Community Media board president, along with community advocate Helen Bradshaw, retired Denver Division Chief Sonya Gillespie, and Stephanie Laing of Denver’s Office of Community Empowerment.
Additional honorees represent organizations spanning arts, education, business and civic engagement, including the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance organization, Cross Purpose and the Museum for Black Girls.
Following the awards, a series of short presentations will address key issues affecting Black women and families in the metro area. Topics include education, housing, youth and families, health, business, politics and the role of the church.
Speakers at the event include public health leaders, real estate professionals, nonprofit executives and elected officials such as Arapahoe County Commissioner Rhonda Fields.
The event is slated to end with a 2026 election candidate session featuring remarks from Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib. Candidates for offices ranging from U.S. Senate to local school boards are expected to participate.
