AURORA | One dog was killed and residents of four northeast Aurora townhomes were displaced after a lengthy fire engulfed a multi-family complex Wednesday afternoon.
No firefighters or residents were injured as a result of the fire.
Aurora firefighters responded to the blaze in the 16400 block of East 18th Place at about 4:45 p.m. June 17, according to Sherri-Jo Stowell, spokesperson for Aurora Fire Rescue.
First responders removed two dogs from the structure north of East Colfax Avenue and south of Star K Ranch and provided oxygen and chest compressions to both animals. One of the dogs later died.
All four units sustained heavy damage from the fire, Stowell said. The American Red Cross helped provide immediate accommodation to three adults and two children.
Other residents arranged alternative accommodation for themselves.
The exact cause remains under investigation.
Aurora Fire Chief Fernando Gray imposed preliminary burn restrictions in the city to combat increasingly dry conditions late last month.
Stowell said Aurora firefighters have been responding to small brushfires in the city on a daily basis in recent weeks. Fire officials contained a small vegetation fire near East Sixth Avenue and South Chambers road hours before the residential fire yesterday.
