High IQ dogs at the Carson and Barnes Circus

The Coal Creek Arena located on the fringes of the city on East Sixth Avenue traditionally draws cowboys, rodeo riders and nature lovers. The city’s rental arena has hosted events and served as one of the unofficial trailheads for the stretches of trails that wind west from Aurora into Denver.

High IQ dogs at the Carson and Barnes Circus

This weekend, however, the humbly sized rodeo arena will serve a much different purpose, as the Carson and Barnes Circus, which touts itself as “one of the last great American traveling big top circuses,” plays a series of shows on May 29 and May 30.

The circus, which claims to be celebrating its seventy-sixth year in the big top biz, will feature … ahem … “classic circus acts, daring high-wire feats and the antics of dozens of clowns.”

If the prospect of a horde of clowns stuffed into the relatively small confines of the Coal Creek Arena doesn’t frighten you away, the show is also set to feature prancing horses, Asian elephants and “high-IQ dogs.” Performances are 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on May 29 and May 30 at the Coal Creek Arena, 21000 E. 6th Ave. in Aurora. Tickets range from $6 to $16 for children and adults. Information: bigtopshow.com.
