AURORA | City council is reducing and rearranging its council committees from nine to six in an effort to streamline lawmakers’ responsibilities.
The city currently has nine council committees that cover different policy areas, including water, public safety, housing and parks and open space. The proposal would reduce the total number of committees and reorganize which committees oversee which policy priorities.
One committee, Federal, State and Intergovernmental Relations, would remain unchanged. New committees would be Safety, Connected and Engaged, Economically Strong, Well Managed and Water and Natural Resources.
Council is scheduled to discuss the new committees at its Nov. 9 study session.
Each committee will have three to five members, with council members being required to serve on at least two committees.
Councilmember Alison Coombs, who is sponsoring the proposal, said she’s hoping the adjustment will help keep legislative policies from being siloed.
“I think it’s an exciting step and we could be more efficient,” Coombs said at a committee meeting on Oct. 27.
If approved by council, the new committees would start in 2027.
