AURORA | The Aurora Chamber of Commerce will host an educational discussion Tuesday on proposed Aurora sales tax ballot initiatives that would fund infrastructure projects and services in the city.
The discussion is slated from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sept. 15 at Heritage Hall in the Fine Arts Building at the Community College of Aurora, 16000 E. CentreTech Parkway.
In June, city lawmakers unanimously approved three bond measure questions for the November ballot, asking voters for a sales tax increase to fund $264 million in transportation, public safety and city facility capital improvement projects.
If approved, the ballot proposals would enact a 0.325% sales tax increase, or three cents for every $10 in purchase.
The proposals would fund 65 projects across three areas, including transportation, public safety and city facilities, which includes parks, recreation centers and libraries. Some of the major projects include the replacement of the Peoria Street bridge, construction of a new fire station, library and recreation center, improvements to police and fire facilities and park renovations.
Tuesday’s program is part of the Chamber’s Government Affairs meeting and will focus on how the proposed BuildUp Aurora ballot measures would work and their potential effects on businesses, consumers and the local economy, according to a Chamber press release.
If approved by voters, the measures would provide funding for infrastructure related to public safety, transportation, parks, recreation and open space, libraries and cultural services, as well as the city’s Americans with Disabilities Act transition plan.
Chamber officials said the discussion is intended to help members and the broader community understand the proposals before voting.
