AURORA | A 32-year-old man faces drunken driving and other charges after crashing into a police car rushing to a call at a local middle school Tuesday afternoon.
Police said two officers were en route to Prairie Middle School in west Aurora at about 4 p.m. running both lights and sirens after school officials reported a fight during school dismissal.
The patrol car was northbound on South Peoria Street when it was struck in the intersection of East Yale Avenue by car that was westbound on Yale, Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement.
The car was driven by Anthony Robinson Jr., 32, of Aurora, police said.
The impact of the crash caused the patrol car to roll over on its side and onto two cars in the double-left-turn lane on Peoria, Moylan said.
“The driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to drive away from the scene, but was contacted by officers on Yale Avenue, about one block from the crash,” Moylan said.
The officers received minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Robinson was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries.
He was released and later arrested and now faces charges of drunken driving, leaving the scene of a crash, possession of cocaine, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving without insurance, Moylan said.
