COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. | A dog has been infected and at least one rabbit has died recently in Yoder of tularemia, a bacterial infection known as “rabbit fever.”
The Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1FQCqqA ) several dead rabbits were reported in the area, and one of them on Monday tested positive for the virus. The dog is being treated with antibiotics.
The animal infections are the first confirmed cases in El Paso County this year.
Those that have come in contact with the dog are being monitored. According to El Paso County Public Health, no one has tested positive for the disease.
County health officials are warning people to be careful around dead or sick animals, as that is how the disease can be transmitted. Insects can also transmit the disease.
