AURORA | A look at some of the events involving Aurora winter prep sports teams scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16 or Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, as compiled by Sentinel Sports Editor Courtney Oakes:
AURORA PREPS WHAT TO WATCH, 1.16-1.17.26
BOYS BASKETBALL: Regis Jesuit (6-6) — coming off a solid home victory over Cherry Creek — seeks its third win in its past four games when it opens Continental League play on its home floor at 7 p.m. Friday against Douglas County (1-10). …City League is underway and continues for Vista PEAK Prep (4-7 overall, 0-1 in City League) with a 7 p.m. Friday home contest against Denver East (5-6, 0-1). Another league contest on the same day has Hinkley (0-7, 0-1) on the road at Montbello (6-6, 0-1) at 7 p.m. …Some solid non-league contests appear Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. when Overland (5-7) — in the wake of a nine-point home win over Lewis-Palmer — welcomes in 9-4 Fossil Ridge. Two hours later, Grandview (7-4) comes off a week-plus break for a 4 p.m. visit to Legend (7-5).
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Smoky Hill (9-2) takes a three-game winning streak on the road for a 6 p.m. Friday non-league contest against Northglenn (7-3). A victory puts the Buffaloes in double-digits in the win column for the first time since 2021-22. …City league play continues at 7 p.m. Friday when Rangeview (5-5 overall, 0-1 in City League) visits Denver South (8-5, 0-2) in the first of two meetings between the teams. …The Continental League slate begins for Regis Jesuit (9-4) — on a three-game winning streak after a nine-point win over Grandview — with a 6 p.m. contest at Douglas County (1-9 and on a six-game losing streak). …A quality non-league contest between Aurora area programs is set for 11 a.m. Saturday when Cherokee Trail (owner of an Aurora-best 11 wins against just one loss) plays host to Vista PEAK Prep (6-5), while also in non-league play, Grandview (6-6) makes a 2:30 p.m. visit to Legend (7-5).
BOYS WRESTLING: The Top of the Rockies Invitational — an annual showdown hosted by Centaurus High School that includes top Colorado teams in addition to others from Kansas, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming — runs Friday and Saturday with a full squad from Grandview (ranked No. 2 in On The Mat’s most recent rankings) plus five entries from Vista PEAK Prep and three from Smoky Hill. …Cherokee Trail makes yet another trip out of state as it heads to Farmington, Utah, for the Rockwell Rumble Friday and Saturday along with Regis Jesuit. Teams from Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming also appear in the field. …Eaglecrest heads to Holy Family at 5 p.m. for a dual tournament.
GIRLS WRESTLING: Regis Jesuit travels to Farmington, Utah, for the Rockwell Rumble tournament Friday and Saturday. …The Survivor Series tournament hosted by Mountain Vista on Saturday includes Aurora Central, while Eaglecrest heads to the Skyview Invitational, Overland competes in the Loveland Invitational and Vista PEAK Prep is part of the Holy Family Invitational.
GIRLS SWIMMING: The inaugural Dick Hewson Invitational in Loveland on Friday includes Cherokee Trail and Eaglecrest. The meet begins at 3 p.m. at the Dick Hewson Aquatic Center at Thompson Valley High School.
ICE HOCKEY: Grandview (2-6) heads to Big Bear Ice Arena at 6 p.m. Friday to take on Heritage (4-8-1) in the only contest involving Aurora area programs over the weekend.
