DENVER | The Regis Jesuit defensive backfield came up big in the largest moments — specifically the fourth quarter — of Friday night’s clash with parochial school rival Mullen.
The Raiders clung to a touchdown lead in the final quarter and the Mustangs had a slew of chances to catch up, only to be thwarted by a group that included juniors Logan Singer and Will Anzures and sophomore Colt Jones.
All three had interceptions in the final frame — and combined for five on the night, including a hat trick for Singer — as Regis Jesuit held on for a 21-14 win at De la Salle Stadium. Coach Danny Filleman’s team overcame turnovers of its own to win a second straight game after starting in an 0-3 hole.
Sophomore Joe Pron’s touchdown run in the early stages of the third quarter stood up as the difference after sophomore Luke Rubley and junior Benjamin Bacon had rushed for scores in the opening half.
Singer now leads Colorado in interceptions regardless of classification with six, as he picked up his first one in the first quarter in the end zone, then had two more in the closing minutes. Anzures’ over-the-shoulder interception inside the final two minutes finally put an end to the last gasp for the Mustangs (1-4).
Regis Jesuit opens Class 5A Southern League play at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 with a home game at Lou Kellogg Stadium against 0-5 Chaparral.
