LAKEWOOD | The Regis Jesuit baseball team is part of the Class 5A Final Four yet again, though a long road remains ahead in its quest to win a state title.
The sixth-seeded Raiders finished 2-1 on the opening weekend of the double-elimination 5A Championship Series, capped by a come-from-behind 9-7 victory over No. 8 Castle View Saturday afternoon at All-Star Park, which earned them passage to the final weekend.
Regis Jesuit rebounded from a walk-off loss to No. 2 Cherry Creek a day earlier and staved off elimination as it joined the Bruins (3-0), top-seeded Grandview (2-1) and No. 5 Broomfield (2-1) as survivors. It’s the third straight season that coach Matt Darr’s team has made it to the final weekend.
The Raiders would have to win four games over the final two days to win the state title, beginning with an elimination contest against the Eagles (who ousted No. 3 Arvada West) at 10 a.m. May 30 at All-Star Park. The winner of that game turns around for a 12:30 p.m. game vs. Grandview for a spot in the May 31 state final against Cherry Creek.
First, Regis Jesuit (18-7) had to get past Continental League rival Castle View (20-8), which was no small task. With both teams using significant pitching to get to the final day, the teams used three pitchers apiece and it made for an offensive contest.
The SaberCats scored 13 runs in the previous game of the day and kept the bats going as they pushed across the first three runs of the game against Raiders’ starter Ryan Neumann. Regis Jesuit finally broke through in the third inning against Castle View starter Ethan Scott, who it touched for five runs. The rally included a two-run double by senior Jace Filleman, a two-run single by senior Luke Reasbeck and a sacrifice fly from senior Gavin Cronin.
The SaberCats answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to go in front again and held a 6-5 lead as reliever Cooper Nason settled in. But senior pinch hitter Isak Stevenson singled to open the bottom of the sixth, while senior Christian Lopez and junior Chase Massey also hits to load the bases.
Senior Nick Wiley delivered a two-run single that put Regis Jesuit in front, then Reasbeck delivered a run via sacrifice fly and sophomore shortstop Brady Wright had a two-out single to bring in another and give the Raiders a three-run lead that was plenty for sophomore Cade Filleman, who got the win with two innings of relief.
Last season, Regis Jesuit won the first three games of the Championship Series, but lost consecutive games on the final day to Cherry Creek to finish as the state runner-up. In the 2023 season, the Raiders were eliminated by Cherokee Trail in the semifinals.
