DENVER | Mackenzy Pedrie and Anna Kaminsky do a great job pumping each other up when they are on the tennis court together.

The Regis Jesuit No. 4 doubles team might need to send some of that encouragement to Rock Canyon’s Kendall Smith and Alexa Weist, who hold the Raiders’ fate in the Class 5A girls state tennis tournament in their hands Tuesday.

Pedrie and Kaminsky posted the only first-round victory of the four doubles teams qualified for the three-day tournament at Gates Tennis Center, them dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Smith and Weist. If the Jaguars win the semifinals at 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Raiders would come back into the consolation bracket and could play for third.

The Regis Jesuit duo got off on the right foot at the tournament with a thorough 6-2, 6-1 win over ThunderRidge’s Emilie Hines and Megan Lavoie, who they defeated 6-4, 6-3 in Continental League play three weeks earlier.

Regis Jesuit’s other state qualifying team — the No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Catherine Nemechek and junior Clare Quinn — won’t have a playback chance.

The Raiders needed Denver East’s Katie Mead and Alyssa Schroeder, who dealt them a 6-4, 6-3 defeat in the opening round, to advance to the state championship match, but the Angels lost to Fairview’s Carolyn Roberts and Elle Savage in the next round.

Nemechek earned a third-place medal at No. 2 doubles as a sophomore in 2013.
