AURORA | Cherry Creek cruised to victory in the fourth Centennial League girls golf tournament of the season played Wednesday at Aurora Hills G.C., but the chase for second place was highly contested.

Cherokee Trail was in the hunt along with Arapahoe and Mullen for the runner-up position behind the Bruins and despite two players in the top eight individually — junior Brinnon Cook and senior Haylee Clark — the Cougars settled for third, coming in one stroke behind the Warriors and two in front of the Mustangs.

Cook finished with a score of plus-5 77, which tied her for fourth place — six strokes behind individual medalist Tatum Platt of Cherry Creek — while Clark shot 79 to tie for sixth. Coach Justin Jajczyk’s Cherokee Trail team has finished third in three of the four league tournaments thus far and also has a second place result as well.

Cook played the first 11 holes at plus-2, then responded to a stretch of three straight bogeys with her second birdie of the day on the par-4 Hole No. 16 (her other came on the par-5 No. 8) to finish on a high note. Clark, meanwhile, shot plus-6 through her first six holes, then got on track with her only birdie of the day (on the par-3 Hole No. 7) and played the rest of the day at plus-2.

Fifth-place Grandview’s top result came from sophomore Jacqueline Cho, who carded an 86 to finish in a tie for 12th, while the best of Eaglecrest’s two scorers was freshman Kendall Exstrom, whose 99 placed her 23rd.

The fifth Centennial League tournament of the season is scheduled to played at 9 a.m. April 29 at Saddle Rock G.C.
