HIGHLANDS RANCH | As the No. 32 seed in the Class 5A girls soccer state playoffs, the Rangeview girls soccer team had the tallest of orders in taking on top-seeded Mountain Vista.

The Raiders went down 4-0 Tuesday night at Shea Stadium, but it was a reasonable result for a young team taking on 5A’s top-scoring team that had beaten six opponents during the season by five goals or more.

Megan Massey scored a hat trick in the first half for Mountain Vista, which improved to 14-2 overall and moved into the second round, where it will take on Fairview. The No. 16-seeded Knights blanked Arapahoe 3-0.

Coach Vic Strouse’s Rangeview team, which had just four seniors on the roster, finished the season 8-6-2 overall.

The first round saw all four teams from the East Metro Athletic Conference — Rangeview, Hinkley, Brighton and Prairie View, who received four of the five lowest seeds in the 32-team bracket — fall to higher-seeded opponents.

The Thunderbirds, who tied Rangeview 2-2 in double overtime in the regular season, lost a 5-0 decision to No. 2 Grandview, while No. 28 Brighton suffered a 5-0 defeat at No. 5 Pine Creek and No. 30 Prairie View got routed 9-0 by No. 3 ThunderRidge.
