AURORA | As her team took the first step towards what she hopes is a Class 6A girls basketball state championship, Sienna Betts passed another milestone Saturday.
The 6-foot-4 Grandview senior star became Colorado’s all-time girls career rebounding record during the regular season (story, here) and she took it another step further during Saturday’s first round playoff win over Horizon.
Betts hauled in rebound No. 1,448 in the opening half of a 72-30 victory, which made her the state’s all-time rebounding leader — boys or girls — according to Colorado High School Activities Association records. Betts passed Discovery Canyon grad Ashten Prechtel (who had 1,336 between 2015-19) to take the lead in the girls list and she now has surpassed the 1,447 rebounds credited to boys all-time leader Scott Wilson, who played at Custer County between 1972-75.
“I think it’s really cool, I totally forgot that was happening today,” Betts said. “It’s really exciting, it’s awesome. It just kindof happens. I feel like I’m not going crazy after rebounds, I think I just position myself. I don’t really box out or anything and the ball comes to me.”
Before she sat for the fourth quarter, Betts (who scored 24 points as well) added four more to give her 1,451. If coach Josh Ulitzky’s Wolves go all the way to the 6A state championship game, she would have four more games to add to her record.
Next up for Grandview (21-3) is a 6 p.m. March 5 home contest against No. 16 Rocky Mountain (18-6) with a spot in the Great 8 at the Denver Coliseum on the line.
