With the debut a second classification in girls wrestling this season, a schedule shift has taken place for the entire tournament. The first two rounds of the Class 5A girls tournament will take place at the same time as the 5A and 4A boys on 12 mats between 5-9 p.m. Feb. 13. Second round consolation matches run from 12:45-4 p.m. Feb. 14, followed by semifinals at 6 p.m. and the third round of consolations at approximately 7:15 p.m. Consolation semifinals are slated for 9 a.m. Feb. 15, followed by fifth-place matches and then third-place matches. The Parade of Champions for girls and boys is at 4 p.m. ahead of finals contested on six mats.

Aurora area programs combine to have at least one wrestler in all 14 weight classes of the Class 5A girls state tournament, with multiple qualifiers in seven weights (110 pounds, 125, 130, 135, 140, 190 and 235). Three of those weights have three local qualifiers in 125 (where all three area wrestlers — Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon, Eaglecrest junior Jordan Heibult and Regis Jesuit junior Hannah Pramita all ended up in the lower half of the bracket), plus 140 (with Eaglecrest freshman Maxime Lantz in the top half of the bracket and Overland junior Dureti Abdulkadir and Regis Jesuit freshman Heidi LaTourrette in the bottom half) and 235 (which includes Regis Jesuit sophomore Jordyn Walker in the top bracket and Overland senior Ruth Worknhe and Vista PEAK Prep sophomore Khloe Yizar in the bottom half and slated to face each other in the opening round).

Tom Blair of Inside Colorado Wrestling released his predictions for the top six placewinners in each of the 14 weight classes and his projections have eight Aurora wrestlers making their way onto the medal podium and three others close.

Blair’s projects have two Aurora wrestlers advancing to championship matches in Regis Jesuit sophomore Remington Zimmerer at 120 pounds and Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon at 125 pounds. He has both finishing as runners-up to Amaya Hinjosa of Widefield and Pomona’s Alora Martinez, respectively. Other projected placers: Eaglecrest senior Bailee Mestas (fourth at 130 pounds), Eaglecrest freshman Maxime Lantz (fifth at 140), Eaglecrest senior Natalie Replogle (sixth at 145), Vista PEAK Prep junior Parice Jones (sixth at 190), Overland senior Ruth Worknhe (fourth at 235) and Vista PEAK Prep sophomore Khloe Yizar (fifth at 235).

Among local qualifiers, three come in after winning regional championships and all came from the Region 3 at Poudre High School, where Regis Jesuit sophomore Remington Zimmerer earned the 120-pound title and Vista PEAK Prep had champions at 125 pounds in junior Amelia Bacon and 190 pounds in junior Parice Jones. Area programs had five runners-up from the Region 2 tournament at Fountain-Fort Carson with four from Eaglecrest (junior Sydney Babi at 110 pounds, junior Jordan Heibult at 125, senior Bailee Mestas at 130 and freshman Maxime Lantz at 140 pounds) and the other from Overland, where senior Ruth Worknhe took second among a pool of just three wrestlers at 235. Only one of Aurora’s qualifiers made state via a regional wrestleback and that was Regis Jesuit freshman Heidi LaTourrette, who defeated another local wrestler (Smoky Hill’s Grace Song) in a Region 3 wrestleback at 140 pounds. (Full team scores and individual results for Region 2 and Region 3 tournaments, here).

Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon and Overland senior Ruth Worknhe are the most state seasoned among Aurora’s qualifiers with three trips apiece. Bacon has a 5-3 career record at state as she went 2-2 at 115 pounds in 2023 and finished 3-1 with a runner-up state finish at 120 pounds last season, while Worknhe had an 0-2 record in her two previous trips to state. Bacon is one of two returning placers from last season’s state tournament as Regis Jesuit sophomore Remington Zimmerer placed sixth at 105 pounds. Emma Roberts of Eaglecrest placed in 2024 as a sophomore, but was lost this season due to injury. The other qualifiers with one previous trip to state are Eaglecrest junior Sydney Babi (qualified at 110 pounds for a second straight season with a 1-2 mark in 2024) and Eaglecrest senior Natalie Replogle, who is at 145 pounds this season after she went 2-2 at 135 last season. The remaining 19 Aurora wrestlers will make their first state appearances.

Two of Aurora’s qualifiers come into state with 40 wins and both hail from Eaglecrest in junior Sydney Babi at 110 pounds (40-9) and junior Jordan Heibult at 125 pounds (40-14). The highest winning percentage among Aurora qualifiers belongs to Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon, who has won 97 percent of her matches with her 32-1 record. Just behind is Regis Jesuit sophomore Remington Zimmerer, who has 34 wins in 37 matches (92 percent winning percentage). Twenty of Aurora’s state qualifiers have winning records, with four below .500.

For a third straight season, there is a family tie in the tournament as Vista PEAK Prep junior Amelia Bacon qualified, as did her twin brother, Ian, who is in the Class 5A boys 120 pound bracket. Both won regional championships this season.

The breakdown of Aurora state qualifiers by yearfive are seniors, nine are juniors and there are seven sophomores and three freshmen.
