AURORA | Residents are invited to join a virtual town hall on Dec. 18 to discuss the latest updates on the city’s police and fire reforms under a state consent decree.
“This is a chance for you to stay informed, voice your concerns, and contribute to the conversation about the future of our community,” city officials said in a statement.
The City of Aurora and police department are bound by a consent decree with the Colorado attorney general to enact a catalog of police reforms after an investigation determined there were “patterns and practices” of excessive force against suspects and subjects, in particular, people of color.
The session will allow the public to review the recently released police reform progress report findings and engage directly with officials from the city as well as independent monitor officials from IntegrAssure, hired to oversee the reform efforts.
The virtual town hall meeting, organized by the Aurora Community Advisory Council, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and be held online and by phone. Attendees will hear a summary of the report’s key findings, learn about progress made during the first reporting period of the third year of “monitorship,” and have the chance to ask questions and share their perspectives.
IntegrAssure identified the following nine events and/or issues of note “focus items” that reflect key events, significant achievements, significant developments, or areas that must be prioritized to achieve substantial compliance with the consent decree, according to the report:
1. Kilyn Lewis’s fatal officer-involved shooting
2. Appointment of Chief Todd Chamberlain
3. Operational integrity & RISKS Reviews
4. Fighting crime with data
