AURORA | Police shot and killed a man near Laredo Elementary School Friday they say was wanted for kidnapping and robbery.

Police say the officer who shot the man was not injured. No information about the man was made immediately available, although he was known to be armed and dangerous, according to Diana Cooley, spokeswoman for Aurora Police. It’s unclear why officers shot the suspect. The shooting occurred in the 16200 block of East 12th Avenue, near Laredo Elementary School, 1350 Laredo St.

The shooting happened around 1:15 p.m. Friday when police say they attempted to arrest the man, who was on foot. It’s unclear how many times officers shot the man, nor what prompted the shooting. The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

“We’re still investigating…what actions transpired between the time the officers attempted to make that contact and the time he was shot,” Cooley said.

A swarm of officers surrounded the area after the shooting. A white SUV and dark-colored pickup truck reportedly associated with the shooting were abandoned near the scene, and clothes were strewn along the sidewalk. It’s unclear what role the SUV and truck played in the shooting.

The nearby elementary school was not put on lockdown, however several students were escorted home by officers.

The proximity of the shooting to the nearby school put some residents on edge.

“I’m so shaken up right now,” Rachel Perez, a nearby resident said. Perez learned of the incident on her way to pick up her daughter from a daycare center on Sixth Avenue and Chambers Road.

“A lot of these kids walk home from school by themselves,” she said. “It’s very terrifying.”
