HIGHLANDS RANCH | The Grandview girls tennis team came away with one berth in the Class 5A individual state tournament when 5A Region 4 play concluded Thursday at Rock Canyon High School and Southridge Rec Center.
The Wolves’ No. 3 doubles team of seniors Maddie Mayer and Quincy Muntean went the long way, but won a three-set playback to secure a spot in the 5A girls tennis individual state tournament, which runs May 9-11 at City Park in Denver.
The No. 1 doubles team of junior Romie Pachorek and senior Lauren Stec were a set towards joining the No. 3 team at the state tournament for coach Jeff Ryan’s Grandview team in a playback of their own, but dropped the final two sets to Legend.
Mayer and Muntean finished 3-1 in the tournament to qualify for state for the first time, as they rebounded from a semifinal loss to eventual regional champion Rock Canyon. The Wolves first knocked off Boulder — which was the top seed coming into the tournament before it lost to Legend in the semifinals — with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
That put Mayer and Muntean into a playback against Legend, which won the first set 3-6, but the Wolves rolled the rest of the way in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Pachorek and Stec took the same path against the same opponents as they lost in the semifinals to Rock Canyon, then defeated Boulder in the third-place match and they even took a set lead against Legend in the playback. The Titans roared back to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Channing Worthington and junior Ava Stubbs placed fourth at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, for Grandview, as did the doubles teams of junior Emma Cary and sophomore Linhvy Nguyen (No. 2) and junior Hailey Ocansey and senior Ashlyn Thompson (No. 4) in their brackets.
