AURORA | A man was pulled injured but alive from the inside of a garbage truck Friday morning after the driver heard “moaning” coming from the truck’s container and called 911, Aurora firefighters said.

Firefighters said it remains a mystery how the man ended up inside of the truck.

“It is not known how long the patient was stuck,” Aurora Fire Rescue spokesman Shannon Hardi wrote in an email. “Once the trash truck driver called 911, AFR responded and worked quickly to extricate the individual safely.”

Hardi said the driver was alerted to the man’s presence early in his route, which likely saved the man from being crushed by the compactor inside of the truck that would have been turned on as more garbage was piled on top of him.

Shortly after 5 a.m., firefighters met the driver near Wheeling Street and East 19th Place, and sent a team into the container of the truck. The team stayed with the man until a door to the container was opened.

Hardi said firefighters used a spine board and a tarp to lift the man to safety. Aurora Fire Rescue said in a news release that the man was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
