The stage is set for the showdown between the Grandview and Valor Christian football teams.
The Eagles’ loss to Cherry Creek on Oct. 17 took a bit of the luster off the game, but the teams will still meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Legacy Stadium with the Centennial League championship at stake.
Grandview (8-0) did its part with a 53-13 victory against Overland on Oct. 16, as senior running back Chukwuma Obinnah racked up 261 yards and three touchdowns and senior defensive back Cameron Knight picked off three passes. The Wolves took over the top spot in the Associated Press’ Class 5A poll this week, while Valor Christian dropped to No. 4 after its 33-17 loss to Cherry Creek.
“We’ve been excited for this game all year; we’re just ready,” Obinnah said. “It’s 1 vs. 2, our home game, Senior Night. Let’s go. It doesn’t get any better.”
• The Prairie View volleyball team took advantage of a handful of errors at key times by Rangeview to post a 25-12, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23 road victory over the Raiders on Oct. 21. The ThunderHawks overcame 14 kills by sophomore Tyler Speller and 11 kills and 16 digs from junior Jackie McBride to snap Rangeview’s 10-match winning streak and take over sole possession of first place in the EMAC with one match to play.
• The Regis Jesuit field hockey team saw its season come to an end on Oct. 20 with a 2-0 first round state playoff loss to Denver East at All-City Stadium. Junior goalie Claire Stemper made three saves, but the Angels put two shots into the goal in a four-minute span in the second half. The Raiders, Aurora’s lone playoff qualifier, finished the season 7-8-1.
• Senior quarterback Matt Houghtaling threw three touchdown passes and junior running back Alec Barnes rushed for 126 yards and two scores as the Regis Jesuit team posted a decisive 35-7 win over previously unbeaten Mountain Vista on Oct. 17 at Lou Kellogg Stadium. Ace Escobedo had three of the Raiders’ eight sacks.
• The Rangeview football team kept its South Metro League title hopes alive by rallying for a 22-13 win over Arapahoe on Oct. 16 at APS Stadium. Trailing 13-9 at halftime, the Raiders got a touchdown pass from quarterback Quaid Vincent to Elijah Reed to go ahead and Vincent scored again on the ground to help Rangeview get to 5-0 in the league and 6-2 overall ahead of a showdown with Heritage Oct. 24.
• The defending Class 5A state champion Overland gymnastics team appears on its way to finding the form it needs for the final stretch of the season. With some key performers returning from injury, coach Lisa Sparrow’s Trailblazers’ co-op team posted a score of 181.250 points to capture the Centennial/Continental League championship in a meet contested Oct. 15 at Ponderosa High School. Senior Devin Bundas and sophomore McKenna Turbyne each earned first team all-league honors with their finish in the all-around standings and senior Kellyn Toole made the most of her return from injury to earn second team accolades to help Overland finish comfortably in front of runner-up Cherry Creek (179.325) — which won last season’s meet — for the league title.
