EDITOR: We have watched rangers patrolling our parks and forests, never fully realizing the importance of their drive-bys.

My son and I capsized our canoe in the middle of the Aurora Reservoir. The ranger patrolling the dam in his truck spotted our overturned vessel with us hanging onto each end and radioed the rangers at the marina who arrived shortly in their patrol boat.

We could already feel the effects of 50-some-degree water when they arrived and pulled us onto the boat, extracted the canoe and our floating gear and took us to shore.

We do not know their names and did not get to meet the ranger in the truck, but we would like to publicly thank them for doing their job, and doing it well.
