AURORA | With several wildfires raging around the state, Aurora officials said today they have cancelled the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display.

Other Fourth of July events, including a free concert on the great lawn at the Aurora Municipal Center, will go on as planned but the fireworks display has been cancelled, said Kim Stuart, a spokeswoman for the city.

City officials said last week that despite a statewide ban on personal fireworks, the city’s public display — one of the biggest in the state — would go forward. But since that announcement, conditions have only worsened and a fire in Colorado Springs has forced more than 30,000 people to flee their homes.

Stuart said the city will be collecting donations for victims of the fires at July 4 celebration, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the municipal center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.

Nearly two dozen other Colorado communities are canceling their July 4th fireworks displays because of high fire danger, including two regions that are still fighting wildfires.

Boulder officials announced Wednesday that the annual Ralphie’s Independence Day Blast fireworks show at the University of Colorado’s Folsom Field has been cancelled as crews fight the Flagstaff Fire just west of the city. Colorado Springs is also fighting a major wildfire and city officials said they can’t spare any resources to protect commercial fireworks.

Several communities, including Estes Park, where 22 homes were destroyed earlier this week, are postponing their displays, while others are holding celebrations with dances and music without the fireworks.

The Associated Press has contributed to this report.

  1. This is actually wise. I’d hate to see thousands of dollars of damage started over a firecracker.

  2. And while you are enjoying the gathering on the lawn of the Aurora Municipal Center (NW corner Alameda Pkwy & Chambers) and beneficial sound of music in the air, set this location in your mind AND COME BACK ON MONDAY, JULY 9 for the open-to-the-public Council meeting regarding SELLING AURORA WATER FOR PERMANENT DESTRUCTION, TAKING IT OUT OF THE WATER CYCLE FOREVER.  Bring your children and Everyone you know. You’ll find your Friends wearing white shirts (great if you wear a white top too). We’ll tell them not to destroy Our Water, Aurora, Colorado….  We can’t drink money, just like we can’t drink oil.
