AURORA | It could be several weeks before investigators decide whether to file DUI charges against a driver who crashed an SUV with 11 people inside on July 4, police said.

Investigators think the driver, whose name has not been released, may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash, but Aurora police. Lt. Jeff Tiurner said it will take several weeks for toxicology tests to determine that.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on July 4 when the Chevrolet Suburban was headed northbound on Interstate 225 near East Iliff Avenue.

Police said the driver, who witnesses said was passing people before the crash, tried to exit at Iliif when they lost control, struck a barrier separating lanes of traffic and rolled over.

Of the 11 people in the vehicle, only the driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts, police said.

Ten people were rushed to area hospitals and police said the other passenger was unhurt and left the scene with friends.

Turner said only one person was seriously hurt, but his injuries are not life threatening.

“Amazingly, everyone else was in pretty decent shape,” he said.
