AURORA | The City of Aurora is asking residents, civic leaders and business officials what qualifications they want to see in the new police chief to replace Dan Oates, who left the position to become police chief for the city of Miami Beach, Fla. in late April.
To create the job description, the city is working with organizations that include Aurora Community College, Aurora Mental Health, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the Asian Pacific Partnership, among others.
“The purpose of this first phase is to determine what the significant challenges are facing next chief, and what kind of qualities and characteristics will get written up in the job scope,” said Aurora City Manager Skip Noe at a Public Safety committee meeting July 1. “We hope to have that at end of July.”
There will also be a community meeting held July 2 at 5:30 pm in Council Chambers at the Aurora Municipal Center for public input on who should be the next police chief.
City officials have hired recruitment firm Bob Murray and Associates to conduct the national search for applicants. Regan Williams, a vice president with the firm will be in charge of the search.
The firm was also used to find Oates in 2005, which took almost eight months.
“I feel confident we’ll have applicants in hand by end of summer first of fall,” Noe said of the search for the new chief.

Pretty simple, we want someone who obeys his oath and follows the constitution.
