AURORA | Michael Krueger’s involvement with the Colorado High School Activities Association has regularly put him on the road from the Western Slope to Aurora.
His trip will become significantly shorter in the next few months, as he’s been hired as the new Aurora Public Schools Athletic Director.
In June, the 46-year-old Krueger will finish up in his current post as the athletic director at Palisade High School — which he’s held for the past eight years — and will start his new job July 1, when current APS AD Tony Antolini will retire.
“There are so many exciting things happening in APS; it’s a great opportunity to come and learn and be part of a growing district that is thriving,” Krueger said Monday. “I hope I can bring something to the table and build on the traditions established by Tony Antolini.”
Krueger grew up in the Denver area, so he’s looking forward to moving back close to the family he still has there, but he’s also thrilled with the shorter drive to Aurora’s CHSAA headquarters. He’s currently the chair of the CHSAA football committee and served on various other committees with the governing body. He is also the President Elect for the Colorado Athletic Directors Association.
“I’m looking forward to the close proximity with CHSAA; instead of the three or four-hour drive, which I make frequently,” he said. “I really appreciate the relationships I have with CHSAA staff and they’ve been so supportive of me.”
CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann noted that Antolini’s contributions will be missed, but that “APS will benefit from the experience that Mike brings to the district.”
Krueger earned his BA in Secondary Education from Mesa State College in 1991, his MA in Counseling/Psychotherapy from Adams State College in 1998 and his Ed.S. in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver in 2007.
During his time at Palisade, Krueger was voted 2011-2012 Colorado Athletic Director of the year.
