AURORA | A few months before Kenneth Mackey faced murder charges following a triple shooting in Aurora last week that left two dead, Denver prosecutors say he tried to kill his girlfriend and her brother.

1437 Lima Shooting

Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney’s office, said Mackey was charged with attempted murder, menacing and other crimes following a May 28 incident in east Denver.

In that case, Kimbrough said Mackey argued with his girlfriend while the pair were in a Taco Bell drive-thru near Colorado Boulevard and East 28th Avenue. The argument continued at the woman’s house and Mackey left.

He later returned to the woman’s home, Kimbrough said, and argued with her and her brother before pointing a pistol at them and pulling the trigger. The gun didn’t fire, Kimbrough said, and Mackey was arrested that day.

He is due in court in the Denver case Dec. 20 for a motions hearing. No trial date has been set.

After his arrest, Mackey bonded out of jail.

Mackey was arrested last week and charged with murder in connection with the Nov. 26 shootings in the 1400 block of Lima Street. In that case, Gregory McCoy, 46, and Martel Cornelius Thomas, 65, were gunned down. An unidentified woman was wounded.

Police said Mackey and another man went to the home at 1437 Lima St. and confronted a man and woman there.

Gunfire erupted and one man was killed inside the house while the woman was wounded. The man who lived at the home fled but was shot and died in an alleyway behind the home, police said.

Police said Mackey stole the homeowner’s Cadillac and was later arrested in Denver. He is being held without bond at the Arapahoe County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

Court documents in the case have been sealed.

Police have not said which of the two slain men lived at the home, but the coroner’s office said Thomas lived in Aurora and McCoy lived in Denver.

According to state records, Mackey has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1990. His 10-page arrest records includes arrests on assault, drug possession, child abuse and other charges. In 2000 he was charged with felony murder in Denver but those charges were later dropped.
