THORNTON | Finally whole, the Overland co-op gymnastics team showed exactly what it’s made of Friday night at the Class 5A state meet.
The Trailblazers battled injuries throughout the season, but went into the team competition of the meet at Thornton High School at full strength and with plenty of determination.
The result was a team score of 187.950 points, which set a new school record and also secured the Overland co-op team’s third 5A state championship in the past five seasons.
Coach Lisa Sparrow’s Trailblazers — who edged 2012 champion Broomfield, which scored 187.500 — also won 5A in 2009 and 2011.
“We rocked everything tonight,” Sparrow said in a message afterwards.
Overland’s performance got a boost from a pair of top-five finishers in the all-around competition, as junior Devin Bundas scored 38.100 points to take third and freshman McKenna Turbyne checked in 5th with a score of 37.775.
Five gymnasts — Bundas, Turbyne, junior Kellyn Toole and seniors Ashlynn Graybill and Aimee St. Martin — qualified for the individual event finals, scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Saturday.
