October Sky (1999) – The story of Homer Hickman (Jake Gyllenhaal), a coal miner’s son, becomes fascinated with rocket science when he sees Sputnik race across the sky.  After experimenting and nearly blowing himself up, he manages to launch his own rocket to the amazement of the entire town, and more importantly, to the reluctant approval of his father.  Based on a true story, this coming-of-age saga takes place in a West Virginia coal-mining town in the late 50s.   Free.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Join us in the new Teen Zone for a special showing of The Hunger Games.  In this movie adaptation, a future North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts.  The Capitol keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl from each district to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.  Read the book and then come to the library to watch the movie, eat pizza and discuss all three.  Registration required.  Free.
