Aurora students are among more than 130 awarded college scholarships in Colorado this week by a private charitable foundation.

The Daniels Fund announced its 2019 Class of Daniels Scholars on Monday. The list includes 218 students from Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah, but the bulk of the winners are Colorado students enrolled in public schools.

Scholarship winners demonstrated “exceptional character, leadership, and commitment to serving their communities.” The average scholarship is more than $18,000 per year.

Almost 20 local students in the Aurora Public Schools and Cherry Creek School District won scholarships, including many from Rangeview and Smoky Hill high schools.

Students from Cherry Creek High School, Grandview High School, Overland High School and Regis Jesuit High School also won scholarships.

According to the Daniels Fund, about 1,850 students applied for this year’s scholarships. More than 4,000 have won the scholarships to date and are currently enrolled about 200 colleges and universities in the U.S.
